CLASSIC CARS, PRESTIGE CARS, PERFORMANCE CARS, AND MORE

CONCEPT CARS - AUSTRALIA

Here’s a list of 10 memorable Australian concept cars—some bold, some beautiful, and some just outright bizarre—but all very cool examples of local automotive imagination. They were either penned by local design teams, built here, or made with Aussie motoring in mind.

Holden Torana GTR-X (1970)

  • A fiberglass-bodied wedge sports car based on the LC Torana GTR XU-1.

  • Looked like a baby Corvette or Opel GT.

  • Sadly, killed off due to cost and niche appeal.

  • Leo Pruneau project, one of his many ideas.

"Marilyn" – The Monaro Convertible (2004)

  • A sexy convertible version of the VZ Monaro, built for the 2004 Sydney Motor Show.

  • Elegant, with a smooth, clean design.

  • The project was cancelled as Holden focused on exports and performance models.

Ford AU Falcon Coupe Concept (1999)

  • Designed as a spiritual successor to the XA-XB-XC Falcon Hardtop

  • Based on the controversial AU Falcon, but far sleeker in coupe form.

  • Never greenlit, but beloved by fans for “what could’ve been.”

Ford EL Falcon Predator (1997)

  • Very out there idea running straight gas lpg fuel, with a highly developed ECU and fuel delivery system.

  • Built by Tickford as a prototype to show Ford’s motorsport muscle.

  • Never mass-produced due to high cost and market concerns.

Holden EFIJY (2005)

  • Retro-futuristic homage to the 1953 Holden FJ.

  • Supercharged 6.0L V8 under the hood, fully modern tech beneath the classic skin.

  • Won awards globally, but was always meant as a showpiece only.

Holden Hurricane (1969)

  • Mid-engined V8 supercar concept with gullwing canopy and futuristic styling.

  • Featured magnetic compasses, rear-view camera, and advanced aerodynamics—way ahead of its time.

  • Restored by GMH in 2011 to much acclaim.

Holden Coupe 60 (2008)

  • Based on the VE Commodore platform.

  • Raw and aggressive with a chopped roofline and V8 power.

  • Showed Holden’s performance future, but was shelved due to GFC-era cutbacks.

Ford R5 Concept (2000)

  • Rugged dual-cab ute with styling inspired by the BA Falcon.

  • Previewed a more lifestyle-oriented off-roader that never came to market.

  • Had potential to take on the Hilux, but Ford focused elsewhere.

Holden Commodore SSX (2002)

  • A bold attempt to create an all-wheel-drive Commodore hatchback.

  • Combined V8 power with a hot-hatch form factor.

  • Public liked it, but Holden decided not to build it.

Ford Terra Ute (1997)

  • Revealed in the mid-1990s, the Ford Terra was a tough, SUV-inspired Falcon ute concept.

  • Based on EF Falcon, and featured raised suspension, and off-road styling cues, and a panel-less tailgate.

  • Remained a concept only, hinting at a crossover between ute and SUV well ahead of its time.
